GIANT Mistakes You Never Noticed In Major Motion Pictures In Braveheart, William Wallace wears kilts. But… …William Wallace lived around the year 1300. Kilts weren’t worn in Scotland until the 16th century. In The Aviator, Howard Hughes orders 10 chocolate chip cookies in a scene set in 1928. But… …chocolate chip cookies weren’t even invented until the 1930s. Ruth Graves Wakefield, who owned the Toll House Inn, came up with the recipe. In Django Unchained, Django wears cool sunglasses. But… …sunglasses were not widespread in the U.S. until 1929. Prior to that, they were used as medical devices and were fairly rare. If you asked director Quentin Tarantino, though, we’re sure he’d have an explanation. In Titanic, Jack says he and his father used to ice fish on Lake Wissota. But… …Lake Wissota was actually formed by a dam in 1917. Jack died when the Titanic sank (spoiler), which was in 1912. In Forrest Gump, Forrest receives a letter from Apple thanking him for investing in the company. But… …the letter is dated 1975. Apple wasn’t publicly traded until 1981. In Panic Room, the intruders flood the panic room with propane. Jodie Foster’s character sets the propane on fire, and crouches down with her daughter near the floor to avoid the flames. But… …propane is heavier than air, so it would sink to the floor and burn them. In Gladiator, Russell Crowe’s character is named “The Spaniard” by the people who capture him. But… …the term “Spaniard” comes from an Old French word, “espaignart,” which wasn’t in use until the 14th century. Gladiator is set in the year 180. In Back to the Future, the license plate of the DeLorean reads OUTATIME. But… …California license plates can only have 7 characters. In Independence Day, the Empire State Building explodes and there is a cool shot of it in the center of the street. But… …the Empire State Building is on a corner. There is no street that goes directly up to it as seen in this shot. In The Goonies, one of the kids finds a 1973 Topps baseball card in the wallet of the dead body they find. But… …the dead body had supposedly been there since 1930. In Halloween, the movie is set in a fictional Illinois town. But… …you can see palm trees in the background proving that it, like many other films, was made in California. In The Hurt Locker, one of the characters says that an Iraqi with a video camera is going to put something on YouTube. But… …the scene in the movie takes place in 2004. YouTube launched in 2005. In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Dr. Jones rushes to Berlin to make sure his father’s book isn’t burned in the Nazis’ book burning. But… …Nazi book burnings took place, for the most part, in 1933. The movie is set in 1938, when the Nazis were already in power and had burned all the books they deemed inappropriate already. In Raiders of the Lost Ark, the idol that Indy gets in the beginning is guarded by an absurd number of traps. But… …somewhere in the ceiling above it, there is a hole letting sunlight in. In Malcolm X, Malcolm’s house is firebombed and he shouts for someone to call 911. But… …the 911 service in the United States wasn’t established until 1968, which is three years after Malcolm X was assassinated. In The Patriot, Mel Gibson’s character has a bunch of children who are played by the same young actors throughout the whole film. But… The movie begins vaguely at the beginning of the Revolutionary War and ends sometime around the end of the war. The kids don’t age at all…even though at least 5 years have gone by. In Pirates of the Caribbean, Captain Barbossa has a Granny Smith apple. But… …Granny Smith apples didn’t exist until 1868. They originated in Australia and were named for the person who helped propagate the variety, Maria Ann Smith (who was 69 at the time). In Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, the characters go to Singapore. But… …Singapore didn’t exist until 1819. A British statesman named Sir Stamford Raffles founded it as a trading post of the East India Company. In Public Enemies, “Pretty Boy” Floyd (as well as “Baby Face” Nelson) are killed before John Dillinger. But… …both Floyd and Nelson outlived Dillinger in real life. In Saving Private Ryan, Tom Hanks’ character, Captain Miller, leans up against a motorcycle after he’s injured. But… …this model of motorcycle, the Ural M-63, was first produced in 1963, almost 20 years after the movie is set. In The Green Mile, John Coffey is sentenced to execution by electric chair. But… …Louisiana, where the story takes place, didn’t start using the electric chair for executions until 1940… five years after the movie is set. In The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne covers up his escape hole with a poster of Raquel Welch from One Million Years B.C.. But.. …the movie One Million Years B.C. was released in 1967. But… …these two things are over two miles apart. In Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Robin’s companion Azeem shows him a telescope. But… …the movie takes place in 1194. The telescope wasn’t invented until the early 17th century. In Top Gun, the pilots greet each other through the clear cockpits. But… …if the two cockpits were close enough to say hello in this way, the back wing of the plane below would run into the plane above, causing both planes to crash. In Troy, Paris uses a beautiful beach umbrella on his chariot. But… …umbrellas like that would not have been found in Troy at the time. Parasols were introduced to Ancient Greece in the 5th century BCE, at least 800 years after Troy was set. In Passion of the Christ, Jesus is played by Jim Caviezel, a white man. But… …Jesus lived in the Middle East, and would therefore not have been white. In Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the kidnapped dolphin makes “dolphin noises” even though it’s not in the water. The classic noises we associate with dolphins sound that way underwater – but not out of the water. They would sound different when the kidnapped dolphin is being carted off. In Cast Away, everything inside the FedEx packages is totally fine. Even someone’s card from their grandma is totally legible, even though it was floating around in the ocean in a non-waterproof cardboard box. In Mr. and Mrs. Smith, you can see a sign that makes it clear they’re in Los Angeles Though the movie is set in New York, during a car chase, you can see a sign that shows they’re actually in LA. In Schindler’s List, someone uses a plastic stamp pad. Stamp pads at the time were metal. In Spider-Man 3, you can see a famous Cleveland landmark. The Terminal Tower is visible during the scene where Spider-Man is fighting Sandman in the armored car. In Gladiator, you can see a gas canister in the back of the chariot at one point. Obviously, chariots did not use gas. In Gone With the Wind, you can see an electrical cord coming out of a “gas” lamp. The 1939 classic is set during the Civil War, meaning that electricity was not available in homes yet. In North by Northwest, one of the extras covers his ears before a gun is fired. A little boy in the background of this scene puts his hands over his ears, anticipating the gunshot before it happens. In The Wizard of Oz, you can see Dorothy’s shoes are just…shoes. Although she’s supposed to be wearing the ruby slippers, you can see Judy Garland was taking a break from the (maybe uncomfortable) ruby slippers in this shot. In Pulp Fiction, the red mark disappears from Uma Thurman’s chest. In the scene where the guys are going to inject Mia (Uma Thurman) in the chest to revive her after a drug overdose, they draw a big red dot with a marker on her to make sure they don’t miss. When she sits up, it’s gone. In Raiders of the Lost Ark, you can see a guy wearing modern clothes. During this shot in the 1930s-set movie, you can see a guy wearing a t-shirt and jeans in the background of one of the public shots. In Reservoir Dogs, a pair of handcuffs moves from the back to the front. Marvin Nash is at first cuffed behind his back, but in a subsequent shot, his hands are cuffed magically in front of him. In Pirates of the Caribbean, you can see a crew member in the background. Although the movie is set in the mid-1700s, you can see a guy rocking a cowboy hat in the background during one of the scenes. In The Dark Knight Rises, there’s a misspelled word in a newspaper headline. It should be “heist,” not “hiest.” Someone should have gotten a copy editor for this one! In The Avengers, Captain America’s suit magically repairs itself during a battle. During the big, final battle, Captain America’s suit gets damaged pretty badly. Although he’s good at healing, his suit really isn’t, so it doesn’t make sense that in the next scene, it’s totally fine. In Jurassic Park, the sparks that fly out of the electric fence are nowhere near Timmy’s hands. Timmy grabs the fence and gets an electric shock, but the sparks that fly aren’t where his hands are. In Speed, you can see the shadow of the bridge underneath the “missing” segment. There is a missing segment of highway that the bus in Speed has to jump over, but since it was digitally removed, you can see the shadow of the actual highway below. In The Goonies, this guy doesn’t pull down his undies to sit on the toilet. Troy, who uses the country club bathroom, pulls his pants down to his ankles, but not his bright-red briefs. We’re not really sure how that worked… In Jaws, you can see the cushion that Quint is lying on as he gets “eaten.” Being eaten by a shark can be tiring, so actor Robert Shaw had a nice cushion to sit on. In one of the shots, you can see it! In Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, two of the hobbits look as tall as an elf. The height differences in the characters in LotR were achieved through a combination of stand-ins, shooting angles and computer graphics. But in this scene, you can see that the actors playing the hobbits are about the same height as Legolas, an elf who is supposed to be much taller. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, you can see the wires that the candles are hanging on. The candles in the dining hall are supposed to be magically floating, but the wires are visible in one of the scenes. In Star Wars, one of the stormtroopers bonks his head on a door frame. In the DVD release, a thud sound effect has been added to poke fun at the little mistake. In Back to the Future, Marty plays a Gibson ES335 guitar at the Under the Sea dance. But… …that guitar model didn’t come out until 1958. The movie is set in 1955. In 300, Xerxes’ army uses bombs. But… …300 is set in Persia in 480 BCE, and black powder, which would have been used to make the bombs, wasn’t invented until the 9th century CE. In China. In The Book of Eli, Denzel Washington’s character is protecting a book that turns out to be the Bible. But… …the Bible in the movie is in Braille. Braille books are typically much longer than books printed in other written languages, and in Braille, the Bible is 39 volumes long. In Pretty Woman, Vivian’s breakfast turns from a croissant into a pancake. Yes, she has a bunch of breakfast options, but the way this is shot, it looks like the croissant magically becomes a pancake. In Terminator 2, the T-1000 punches the windscreen of a helicopter. A few seconds later, the hole it left there is gone. In The Fast and the Furious, you can see the stunt person’s helmet. Although this car is supposed to be driven by a total badass with no regard to safety, you can see that the stunt person who’s actually doing the driving has a helmet on. Safety first! In P.S. I Love You, you can see Hilary Swank’s “modesty top.” Actors doing “nude” scenes often wear something to cover themselves in a color that matches their skin. For a second in this sexy scene, you can see the little tube top Swank is wearing to cover her breasts. In American Pie, a cup changes from blue to clear in one scene. This girl talking to Stifler can’t decide what color cup she’s drinking out of. In The Phantom of the Opera, the phantom’s face is WAY more deformed all of a sudden. When Christine removes the phantom’s mask, at first his face is only a little deformed (with the help of CGI), but then it gets more deformed (since Gerard Butler wasn’t actually burned with acid or whatever).
